The W580i uses the Memory Stick Micro™ (M2™) card that should have come with your phone. if you want to use that card for other purposes, like you can use the M2 adapter. (the adapter does not go into your phone)
for example, if i have a W580i and a 512 mb M2 card but purchase a 2gb card so i can fit more music on the phone, i'll want to use the 512 mb card for other purposes. say i want to use the 512 mb card as a memory stick for my computer or whatever. my laptop memory card reader only has compatibility with memory stick pro cards. this is where the adapter comes into play.
