can you play the nintendo wii over the internet like the other consoles?

i am new to the wii thing and have a wireless connection in my house. the internet works just fine on the wii, but would like to know if there is a way to play friends over the internet, like the playstation and x-box. any help would be greatly appereciated. thank you
 
Yupp there sure is. But it's not with a name like with the PS3, it's with the friend code and you BOTH have to register friend codes. [thats if you have a friend with a Wii and you want to play with them]
If you just want to play with anyone, from your game select online play and go from there.
You cannot play online with all games either.
