How does Mucinex taken orally to the stomach work to loosen congestion in the lungs?

This is the same action as an oral expectorant. I know medications taken orally get absorbed into the blood stream whch can then impact any organ. I'm just curious about the specific action that takes place to cause congestion to become dislodged from your lungs. Does the medicine change the consistency of the congestion to make it less adhesive to the tissues of the lungs?
