Trying to convert cd to tape?

I have audacity, a soundcard, and an audiocable which is connected to the audio out on my karaoke system and plugged into the mic outlet on my laptop. The directions said to do this and then start recording, but when I go to record it doesnt record anything. My line in isnt muted, but it still says mono on audacity. Im pretty new to this, and I need help on what to do. Is it my cable?

It may be easier just to buy a cheap boom box with a CD and a tape deck. It will just be a matter of pushing a couple of buttons at that point.
