Internet Explorer has blank screen?

My computer works fine, except for the internet explorer. Whenever I open the internet, it just has a blank screen and no sites work. I recently installed virus protection or whatever but it says the internal virus database is out of date. I try updating it but whenever I click update it says "Update unsuccessful" Is this the reason why my internet isn't working? How can I fix it? Thanks!
Everything related to internet works like instant messaging and stuff..its just the internet explorer thats a blank screen

update the protection. While not protected it will not show anything. you can also check you Tools bar and see if the "work offline" is unchecked.
