Strangely enough. Yes.
When I was a kid in Vermont, I stepped on a nail in the basement and it went through. Not something I've ever been terribly eager to repeat.

my cousin had a nail go through his back (he backed into a board) had to get a tetanus shot.

my son when he was 2 stepped on a nail, it went right up through his sneaker, between his toes. *whew*

i was stupid enough to wear flip flops whole relaying the hardwood at my friends, it didnt go all the way through, but it was pretty close.
