Okay. Big is not always safe. Big is sometimes not practical. Big is often not efficient. So why do Americans (and Canadians) drive big cars? Lots of cars go up to 220 km/h, but we have no speed limits over 120 km/h. And why do you need good acceleration? It only takes a car a dozen or two dozen horsepower to keep it moving at highway speeds. All of the power is needed when you're speeding up (which is really not that important). Vans are the closest we come to an efficient car, as the inside is a big box which can be emptied and utilised entirely. Full size cars and SUVs which get the same or worse mileage are much less flexible. Only a few percent of SUV owners actually take their SUVs off road. Why the hell do you need a pickup with a V8 when you don't pick anything up? This is ridiculous, people! WHY???
