divX and Xvid, are they the same formats or something?

divX spelt backwards is Xvid, sre they the same format.

No they are slightly different although dont ask me how. DivX is just more popular, therefore more people work on it so i suppose it would produce better quality for a smaller file size, and commercially explored.

Xvid is the open source version of Divx http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xvid otherwise they are the same.

divx is commercial codec. xvid is open source (free). divx players play xvid. As far as quality goes they are pretty much the same. Xvid is more commonly used because its free.
