Download virtual dub (free and under GNU license )
You can re encode to any avi codec(DiVX,Xvid,mpeg,h263...etc)
You can trim it and add effects from the filter menu and can append avi segment and can modify audio codec, volume ...etc
    Virtual dub really rocks
Free + audio and video control

any-video-converter.com is what I use. It's free for the basic stuff and not that expensive if you want other stuff.
