The "Born Alive" issue is irrelevant. The Fetus is incapable of surviving at all at the point that the issue is referring to. The deserts and rivers thing I am not familiar with, but frankly, it sounds like something that was taken way out of context and blown way out of proportion by paranoid repubs, just like the first issue.
