Can a urine pregnancy test at three weeks taken mid day show positive?

I was admitted into hospital on Tuesday with a bowel problem. When asked if I could be pregnant I replied yes but only about three weeks. I gave a urine sample and was told it was negative. Could I be pregnant? as I was under the impression early urine tests should be used with first morning urine.
