overseas and unlock it there? I want to take it to Australia because its only $199 here, is that possible

nope..the price of 199 is only with a contract. without a contract, the prices are 599 for the 8 gig and 699 for the 16 gig although att nor apple is allowing the purchase of an iphone without a contract yet. but they said soon they will.

You need to pay the full price to get an iPhone. If the network provider unlocks it, you can take it to Australia and swap networks. If not, you can approach Prounlocking.com and get the permanent remote unlock service for iPhone.
