Will a 28-135mm lens for a SLR camera be sufficient??

I'm new to SLR cameras ... have learned a lot and have narrowed down my choices. As for lenses, I've tried the standard 18-55mm lens and know this is not enough for me, so I'm looking for a more generic lens so I don't have to switch them up. I'm interested in shooting my infant daughter in the house, but also out in nature ... plus I want to start dabbling in some nature shots and the like.

Would I be best off just buying a camera body and getting the 28-135mm lens or should I buy a kit with the 18-55mm lens and buy a separate lens as well? Any help would be appreciated!
