How long should the ideal trip to Paris last?

What would you say the minimum amount of days one should spend in Paris, allowing them to see and appreciate all the sights? Preferably without cramming them all in. I'd like to take some time to relax and just enjoy Paris, too.

And which arrondissement would you recommend staying in, for a hotel that's cheap (college students, so no need for fancy hotels) but also nicely located?

For a first time visitor a trip of 10-14 days is probably sufficient to see the major sights, take a day trip to Versailles, give a quick look at the most important museums and have a bit of time to just wander.

More than that might even be something of sensory overload.

Paris is a city that needs to be savored and, these days. I enjoy it more as a city to hang out than even for its myriad tourist attractions.
