Difference between 720p x264 and Xvid torrent video files?

I download some tv shows on the net, some of it shows 720p x264 and Xvid, I am confused, which of which is better in terms of picture quallity? which of which can be played on a standalone Dvd player with divx capability? I'm not familiar with these two, please help .

On the same tv show, the Xvid version is only 350 mb, while the X264 is at 1.0 gb, Which one is better?

Xvid is based on MPEG-4, part 2 video standard
x264 is probably based on the H.264 standard (or MPEG-4, part 10).

Most DVD players that can play Divx, should also play xvid files (especially in an avi file).

H264 provides same quality as xvid, but at lower bit rate, or can support HD movies with lower bit rate than xvid or divx.
