How GPS can be used with mobile/ Smartphone?

The GPS system in a mobile / smartphone is a hardware device some software can change the phone to GPS enabled phone?

Is it required to connect to internet using Gprs/edge/3g for using the GPS system all the time or just to download the map of the city?

Example - Nokia E50 is a series 60 phone. It has an in-built software for GPS mapping. You need to purchase the GPS hardware separately from Nokia.

GPS works independent of the GSM network. However, certain added features of the GPS may require network support. But basic mapping is possible without network signal.
