In the run-up to June's draft freshman UCLA guard Zach LaVine gained a great deal of attention for his absurd vertical leap. While LaVine is still a work in progress and doesn't currently possess all the skills teams would like to see from a point guard, his athleticism is elite. When the Minnesota Timberwolves selected him with the 13th pick in June's draft, they got a player who could turn into something special.
For now, though LaVine is best known for dunking. In Wednesday's game against the Phoenix Suns at the Las Vegas Summer League, he proved that his reputation is entirely deserved. Late in the fourth quarter, with the Wolves trying to hold on to a five-point lead, LaVine got to the hoop (through some admittedly poor help defense) and finished with a vicious tomahawk:
If that wasn't enough, LaVine followed it soon after. Following the final buzzer, LaVine decided to give a little bonus to the fans in attendance and watching on NBA TV:
Intentional or not, this dunk serves as a pretty good audition for LaVine's place in the dunk contest at February's All-Star Weekend in New York. Hopefully he gets enough playing time for Minnesota to make an appearance worthwhile.
