Is it possible for a blue ray player to play a homemade DVD and if so how?

I tried to play my dvds in my friends dvd player. when I inserted the first disk it was trying to play several avi movie files. the error I got said "Unable to recognize name" it was unnamed. With the second disk it was vob files and it said "Unable to recognize format"
