...monstrosity to gain power? I love it when a hero is willing to practically mutilate himself, or became an abomination in order to gain the power he needs to accomplish his goal. Like a heroic sacrifice it's cheapen if he just goes back to normal later.
I want the hero to actually experience the consequences of his decision, but also experience the overwhelming power that comes with it (otherwise what's the point). Something like Letto from Dune becoming a giant or worm to gain or Rigg from Pathfinder merging with a parasite that leaves him deform.
