This is probably a question for older Australians - did you ever hitch...

...hike or go on a hitch hiking holiday? http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/webdr06/2013/5/15/11/anigif_enhanced-buzz-12643-1368632168-13.gif

I am not being a reverse-ageist, I just hope that anyone who has hitched a ride lately is aware of the risks. Suggested category was - Travel (General) > Health & Safety

I'm not an older Australian nor have i hitched anywhere but there have been a few times when i've picked up hitch-hikers in the past. I have their bones buried in the back yard.

Just kidding. All the hitchers i've ever picked up have been lovely, decent people.

Yeah Sheila, as a kid growing up in a mill town (Tokoroa nz ) we were approx. 45 minutes from both Taupo and Rotorua. We hitched to those places regularly and clear across to Waihi--a beach town. Hitched to Hamilton a lot too. That was early to mid 70's.

Wouldn't do it now for any money .

Cute video.I have spend half the time in N.Z hitch hiking but only in small country towns. And it was very easy cos they will pick you up within 30 mins when you start walking.I have been picked up by a cop, truck driver's,a small car(Datsun 120y)full of pot smoking bogans who were speeding at the time(never forget that) and so on.That was back in 2004.Cheers
N.Z is the safest country in the world to hitch hike.

Only time I ever did it was when I was serving at RAAF Darwin ...

Always easier & quicker to hitch a lift rather than wait for a taxi into town...

i've hitched all over Oz over many years and i've picked up many a hiker myself ... one problem with picking up hikers ... particularly the un-schooled .... is that they often expect or hope for free handouts as well ..at service stations or pubs becoming very clingy .... thinking.. " Ah ..got my claws into this one ... now what else can i get ? "

I remember thinking I should perhaps pick up one of the many people we used to see hitchhiking, it was quite common in the sixties and seventies. Never did though.

I have hitch hiked through many Countries when I was young and in good health. I came to Australia when I was in my mid 20s and saved money and always went on holidays. I am so glad I did it. But when I keep meeting Australians who have never left their towns while grumbling about how bad things are in Australia instead of embarking to see the world I honestly get sick of them
