I have linuxmint-14.1-mate-dvd-32bit and am trying to get it to boot, but it does the count down and then just sits there with the Linux boot screen. what should I do to make it work? Should i Change the default settings, if so to what?

I assume that you do not get any error on the boot screen.
Try nomodeset.
