Blackboard Collaborate: How to disable all emoticons?

I'm using Blackboard Collaborate version 11.1 and there is a really annoying feature within the Chat window as follows: Whenever I type (1), (2), (m), or certain other symbols within parentheses, it converts it to an emoticon. (1) gives a soccer ball, (2) gives an American football, (m) gives a music note, and so on. I want to disable all of these, because I often type mathematical expressions like (2)^n and it displays to everyone as football^n. How do I disable all of the emoticons?
