middle of my contract ? I want to buy a phone off ebay and get verizon to activate it and cancel my other phone but will they charge me a cancellation fee or is that only if I go to another carrier ???

No, as long as the phone is compatible with Verizon (meaning no SIM card slot) then you should be able to change it without cost.
But if you change carriers completely then yes there is a cancellation fee.
