Can VLC play Xvid videos?

Would it be possible for the latest version of VLC to play Xvid videos? Please give me a detailed answer as possible because there might be some points that I'll miss. I have already tried playing one Xvid file on VLC and turns out it needed and additional plugin which I could not download because I had to pay for it and also because it slowed down my netbook big time.

VLC will play just about any video with any codec. The real issue with VLC is that it uses the OLD version of XviD. You can remedy this by downloading and installing the xvid codec yourself (which is free). This should kill all your xvid problems with any player on your system.
