Using my UK iPhone 4 in the United States?

I have recently moved to the united states but still have an iphone contract with O2 in the UK. I'd like to be able to change it to an american network but am not sure if it's possible or allowed? as i know american phones donot usually use a sim card. can anybody shed some knowledge on this predicament that i am in? any help would be fantastic!
