How do I fix the "unsupported format" error with the divx video player?

-I've downloaded just about every direct show filter there is.
-The .avi files won't play in VLC either.

The exact error states:

"Unsupported Format

This video is in an unsupported format and cannot be played without installing additional DirectShow Filters."


What am I missing? What am I not doing?
This is so frustrating...
