What Sci-Fi movie am I remembering?

I have vague memories of this old sci-fi movie I watched way back in the early 90's (I don't know if it was knew then or not - I know my dad rented it from a movie rental place). It took place in some sort of dystopian society in which these people were kept in a state of sleep most of the time. One person (a woman, I think) wanted to know what real life was like. Near the climax of the film, the bad guy had her thrown down some sort of shaft that had saw blades on the sides. I remember her trying to stop herself from sliding down the shaft by grabbing onto the sides, but the blades were cutting her hands up. Anyone have ANY clue what movie I'm remembering?

It definitely sounds like an old SAW movie to me.
