And why a Hanukkah menorah has 7 candles (and not 6)?
<Freedom>'s information is not generally scholarly believed & is conjecture by one of the folks trying to create ancient connections & notions. Jews have nothing to do with Freemasons, except that antisemites try to connect them together frequently in history such as in the fake book "The Protocol of the Elders."
I would seriously, seriously doubt any connection to Rothchild is legit considering it's not mentioned in any scholarly books...and it's not what the name means. (Child means "river".) It is mentioned on conspiracy theory sites, many of which are antisemitic.

The orgin of the star is unknown. It was used by other cultures before it was asigned to Judaism. It was first connected with Judaism in around the 1700s in several instances. It was somewhat used, but still not heavily, until the Nazis assigned it to the Jews as part of their campaign. Post-war as Israel was forming, there was huge debate in the Jewish community on whether to use this star that had been a symbol of oppression or to use something else like the menorah that is an ancient symbol that was found in the Temple itself.
The menorah has 7 candles, while the Hanukaih which is for Hannukah has 9 branches. It's 8 days of the miracle of light as the anicent story goes, with one shamus (leader) to light the rest. This site will have a lot more on both symbols: http://www.jewfaq.org
According to Wikipedia:
"The Star of David (...) was originally a magical protective symbol and was only later associated with the Jews. It didn't become generally associated with the Jews until the 17th century when the Jewish quarter of Vienna was formally distinguished from the rest of the city by a boundary stone having a hexagram on one side and a cross on the other."
A Hanukkah menorah actually has 9 branches: 8 to represent the 8 nights of Hanukkah and one to light the other candles from. Temple menorahs have 7 branches because, according to the Torah, God ordered Moses to build one that way for his temple.
The first mention of the star was in Amos 5:26 regarding the trek from Egypt to Canaan. Then in 922 B.C., when Solomon married the daughter of Pharoah and went into magic and witchcraft and built an altar to Ashtoroth and Moloch. The book traces the six pointed star from Egypt to Solomon, to Arab Magic and Witchcraft, to Druid use(references are documented). The book traces the star through Freemasonry usage to Mayer Amschel Bauer, who, in the 17th century, changed his name to depict the red six-pointed star (or shield) which he had hung on his door in Germany, and thus began the family of "Red Shield" or Rothschild. The research carried on through this family, to their court of arms, to Cabala, to Astrology, to Hitler and his putting a yellow six-pointed star on all Jews during the holocaust, to the Zionist symbol, and finally to the flag of the State of Israel and beyond.
