My Windows media player won't play .avi files?

why won't my WMP 11 play .avi files? if i try to play them...it says "can't read file" then it goes on to say I need a codec? can someone direct me of where I'm to download this codec?

On my other computer i have WMP10 and it plays .avi fine...but I downloaded divx player first.

My WMP11 is a legit copy...not a fake one or anything. please help
 
Sometimes a particularly codec may not be supported by a particular player.

Nice and dirty, can play almost anything free players are vlc and gom player.
There are also nifty little programmes that will let you examine what codecs different files are in.
