Does unlocked Blackberry Bold 9000 work like locked one?

So I'm thinking of unlocking my att phone so that I could use it in a different country with a local sim card. I've heard that unlocking your bold will cause the 3g to not work.

Situation: I unlock my bold, travel to some country, then return to america, put in my usual att 3g sim card.... will 3g work on the phone?
