How much does it cost to text a friend in Africa from the United States for verizon?

I don't have Verizon (AT&T), so I don't know what your carrier charges for text messages, but every text message, no matter where you send it is the same flat rate. If you don't have texting on your phone already (you don't pay a monthly rate for a set ammount of "free" ones), it will probably be about .20c per message. It will be about 20c if you texted your friend right next to you, or you text your friend in Africa.
