In the original Japanese version of Murakami's "Dance Dance Dance", what phrase

represents "shoveling snow"? Hard to fit all that into the question, but, in the English version of Haruki Murakami's Dance Dance Dance, the protagonist makes use of a metaphor where he describes his work as "shoveling snow" or "shoveling cultural snow". I'm curious as to how close this translated metaphor is to the original.

Is "shovel" actually used, is there a set phrase in Japanese which represents the same idea, etc.

If anyone has read the original and could tell me how it was stated there, I'd appreciate it. My Japanese is only beginner-level but if you can give me the kana/kanji used that would be useful as well.

Pretty obscure question, but I cant think of a better way to go about this really.
