Many cite the Treaty of Tripoli when this question is asked. Let's examine the truth about it:

Whoever said the treaty is not real, or is fake, they are idiotic fundies who tried to get their way and make this nation a christian nation. If this nation was a christian nation, it would be like the 1800's.

The United States was founded as a country without a state religion, but a country that had a deep intellectual and moral debt to Christian thinking. Not all the founders were Christians; several were Deists who nevertheless admired what they thought was a "simple" or "primitive" Christianity.

We were founded as a nation where people are free to believe whatever they want. Despite what the hardline Christians say, the founding fathers didn't mean for America to be a Christian theocracy. Jefferson was a deist, not a Christian.

Some of our forefathers who came here from England were Freemasons. The Freemasons originated as the men the God Yahweh gave the gift of knowledge of building structures. They were chosen from the twelve tribes of Israel that Yahweh and Moses lead out of Egypt. Their first structure built was the portable Tabernacle in the desert and then the Temples once they reached the promise land. So you see America is a nation founded by the descendants of Abraham who's God was always the God Yahweh and never any other god or gods. But as generations went by more Christians came to America than any other religion and brought with them the moral teachings of Jesus Christ which became the dominant religion in America. So that is how America evolved into the country it has become today.

Yes, we are a secular nation.

It's the first ten words of that First Amendment which declare, in no uncertain terms, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.” A Jew can believe that eating pork is wrong, a Hindu can refuse a hamburger, and a fundamentalist Christian can believe that women came from Adam's spare rib, yet no governmental authority can pass laws based on these beliefs. A Jewish president can’t make it illegal for me to eat shellfish, for example.

@ Stevie N: That line was inserted during the Cold War
and ever since.

@ God is in a good mood: A nation's founders do not make a nation's government. Our government is fully secular.

Half of the founding fathers were atheists, nondenominational or staunch supporters of the separation of church and state.

Edit: To be a little more convincing, you may want to quote sources unaffiliated with the Christian Religion...

America was founded on freedom to practice whatever religion you want.....or none if you don't want.

Sorry....I don't view links especially when they lean to the side of the questioner.

No, America was not founded as a Christian Nation. It was something like 3 signers of the constitution that were not Christian at all. With that few signers and 3 not Christian, it cannot be called a Christian nation even though the basics of the constitution was based on Judo-Christian ethics.

Even if America was founded primarily by Christians (and it really wasn't. There's more than one meaning for "God" than the Judeo-Christian version), it doesn't mean that America is a Christian nation, or ever was. The religious beliefs of the founders are not, and do not have any part in the system of government they created.

Some of the founding fathers owned slaves. Is America a slavery nation?

If you know anything about law you must research the people behind the creation of the United States. Many of the key people are against organized religion, Madison, Jefferson, Franklin to just name a few examples. If it was founded as christian nation the first amendment would read very differently.
