Is Homo neanderthalensis an ancestor of modern humans or not? Which is more likely?

In my biological anthropology class last semester, it seemed unsure if Neanderthals were a part of our ancestry or not; there were a few theories that suggested that they mated with our ancestors, they were a part of our ancestral line, or they were completely uninvolved with modern humans. I wasn't sure. Thanks for setting me straight.
