So I get how use the distance formula, but say when you get to d=sqrt(x^2+x+5). The book says that you can ignore the square root and go straight to the derivative of the inside function.
However, my teacher makes us take the derivative of the entire thing (x^2+x+5)^1/2.
I think you still do get the same answer, someone care to explain why?
