The play came on a rebound off Devils goaltender Cory Schneider off a shot by Mikko Koivu that was then deflected by Nino Niederreiter on the way to the net. Spurgeon then gloved the puck and dropped it towards the ice, but instead of waiting for it to fall all the way down, he smacked it into the net from mid-air.
The goal was Spurgeon’s sixth of the year and put the Wild up 1-0 at the 17:58 mark of the first period. Spurgeon came into the game with the best points per-game average*of his career at 0.50 in 38 contests.
Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby has seemed to hold a monopoly on mid-air goals in the NHL this season, with his tallies coming in the month of December. It’s a play that has a high degree of difficulty and when it’s done correctly, it’s generally highlight-reel worthy.
