...mainly a torrent download site.? Kat.ph has a lot of content be it movies, software etc.. Is it illegal to download those torrents? Thanks for your time.
if someone downloaded a movie without knowing that it is illegal to do so, what do he/she can do to make sure that he will be safe in the future.

1. Stop downloading immediately.
2. what about the downloaded content? what to do with already downloaded stuff, just to avoid any future trouble/prosecution etc...

depends how you usse it, you can download file which are free to download but just cause the size is big you use torrent to download faster then thats fine, as well as downloading trails.
But if you were to download hacks and cracks and kegens then that will be wrong

If the file in question is under copyright then it is illegal. The penalty is a fine between $750.00 and $150,000.00 per file illegally downloaded (the max is $250,000.00 for movies) and up to five years in prison per file.

This is a question with a lot of gray areas. Torrents themselves are not illegal. They are just links to a lot of little pieces of larger files that are spread out over a lot of computers all over the world. Sharing files this way is not of itself illegal, as long as the material in question is not copyrighted, and more importantly, someone is not enforcing that copyright. There is a lot of old and obscure stuff in torrents that is copyrighted, but nobody is actively policing. Where downloaders run into problems is when they go after the recent stuff that's popular and in demand. That's the stuff that someone is watching, especially recent popular movies and music, and that's the stuff that will get you a warning from your isp or worse, a dmca notice, or worse yet, a lawsuit or demand for money. Don't be fooled by people who say torrents are anonymous, they aren't. There are a lot of torrents and torrent sites that exist just so people can be tracked in their downloading. The best way to avoid trouble is to keep a low profile, or better yet avoid it entirely. Bittorrent traffic is monitored by many isps, as they consider it a nuisance.
