I installed 2 1GB Ram chips in laptop but system now says I have 1662MB on it?...

...How does this happen? I bought two 1GB chips but after I installed I checked system properties and it shows I only have 1162MB of Ram. DId I get ripped off?

Assuming you are reporting 1662Mb then you will find the missing Ram is being used by the graphics adaptor as shared memory.

If it really is 1162MB then take the DIMMS back to the shop for checking.

could be a couple things...

laptop may not support that much ram.

May be a bad ram stick
