i am restoring a 73 vw bug and no oil pressure?

i am restoring a 73 vw bug and i just got it running but i have no oil pressure the car was in pretty bad shape as far as the wiring and some mechanical problems... i seen that the engine had a Electric oil sending unit on the driver side of the motor under the distributor so i swapped it to a manual one for first start up purpose, so i could keep an eye on it. there is no pressure on the gauge i was wondering if any one knows what the issue could be or how the oil pump works? does it run off of the distributor or crank or what? ive never had a bug so im not to sure on them. so far it seems pretty easy to work on but i would hate to blow it up since i just got it.

Pumps driven from the end of the cam shaft. You put in a new sensor and used the ORGINAL sensor wire I hope.
