Died on the road, super low compression on all 4 cylinders. How much to get a new engine put in? maybe a subaru and the conversion kit? Or just getting a rebuild?

I have a 1981 VW Vanagon air-cooled gasoline engine. I think the engine is pinging under load (sounds kind of like a loud diesel engine for a few seconds while accelerating). I usually set the timing using a timing light. Does pinging indicate the timing is too advanced?
I also pulled the plugs...
