In your opinion, what is the safest, least expensive, most reliable, best on gas mileage, midsized SUV you can buy. I'm going to be getting a used vehicle in a couple months I would just like to hear other's opinions and experience.

What is better to have some fun with on dirt roads? A rally car like a Mitsubishi Evo or an SUV like a Toyota 4Runner? I'm just looking for something that's fun on the dirt roads but still good on pavement.
