Kind of sounds like the infamous all plastic intake manifold gone kaput. You should check around the intake manifold for vacuum leaks.

The solenoid is part of the starter and if it were bad, you would have to replace the entire starter, BUT, I would check the condition of the battery cables. Chances are they could have gotten corroded inside the sheath and I would check for corrosion on the connections of the starter itself.

I think they might be called coolant bypass hoses. You should take them off and take them to an auto parts store. In this case, I suggest Napa because the counter guys are ASE certified and they should be able to identify the part for you.
