The contract can be canceled if you pay the early termination fee of $20 X however many months are left, plus tax. There is no way to get out of a contract without paying.
BTW, your contract must be in someone else's name because you can't legally sign a contract if you are under 18.

Choosing a Carrier is a personal choice so it's up to you to decide. You can take your number with you if you change from Fido. It's called 'porting your number'.
I'm guessing that you are talking about a Pay&Talk phone. If so, you can reactivate on-line by filling in the required info and 'topping-up' your account. You have also lost your old phone number and the system will generate a new one for you.
When your Fido phone runs out of money, call Fido and cancel your account. After that, you can go to the TELUS store or Walmart or Futureshop and purchase the Pay&Talk phone of your choice. Take it home and activate it on-line at telusmobility.com.

TELUS customers can text to the US from Canada for free. If a TELUS customer texts while IN the US then you will pay a 'roaming fee" of 45 cents per text sent or received. Those who don't have a text plan will pay 60 cents per text sent or received.
