I would go for uTorrent. There's not much difference in speed as you rely on the bandwidth of the seeders and peers. However, the selling point of uTorrent is its small footprint. In other words, it is very light on resources so there you go.
Yes it could be due to a failed Windows Update. If doing a System Restore to a much earlier date can't fix it then there's probably something wrong with the default user account. The permissions on the files may have been altered also due to corrupted registry.
