Its a video clip .avi file pretty much standard stuff. Do i need an update or something?

Why does my xvid movie on my USB stick not play on my playstation 3?

It could just be encoded wrong for the PS3 to play it. Get a video converter, such as Total Video Converter or PS3 Video 9, and re-encode / convert the video and then it should work.
