Does anyone know how to play AVI's or Xvid's in Vista Media Center?

I have searched around the internet a lot and it seems everyone likes the FFD-Show plug in. I have downloaded that and Vista MC still won't play my AVI's or Xvid's. I also have downloaded the Media Control application but I have no idea what to do with it now that I have it! Please help! I have Media Center set up to play on my HDTV through my mate's Xbox 360 as an extender and I can't play videos!
