Are DIVX, Avi and Xvid the same thing?

Are they all basically the same format?
If i had a dvd player that could play DIVX would it be able to play .Avi and Xvid?
Why do my .Avi files have Xvid for video compression?

    Thanks
so would a .avi file video which has XVID as its video compression in the summary, play alright on a dvd player that can play Divx or not?

yes i have a divx dvd player and it will play avi xvid etc, as long as it is burnt to disk via a pc based divx player, no transcoding etc just drag and drop through divx player
