Can I play .avi (divx, xvid) on Xbox 360?

I have several questions:

1) Can I play an .avi file from a USB flash drive on a Premium (20GB) 360?

2) Will I need to download an update?

3) Will I need to download something every time I want to watch a video?

The thing is I just bought it and I have seen several comments on this, for example that you can but with a Fall 2007 update, which I don´t know if my 360 has it already. Also, I read somewhere that you need to download a codec EVERY time you watch to play a video. I already read alot about streaming but this is not an option for me, I basically want to use a USB drive. Thanks!
