Surviving with Wolves
An author admits through her lawyers that her
Holocaust memoir, Surviving with Wolves
, was in fact untrue. Misha Defonseca, whose real name is Monique De Wael, created the elaborate story as a child and having repeated it so often she had begun to believe it as fact. The truth came to light when a genealogical researcher investigated the author’s surname and found the facts did not match. The author is already involved in a lawsuit with the publisher and ghostwriter, so it will be interesting to see what happens next.
I suppose the lesson here is to make sure you write the truth if you’re going to publish your memoirs. Make that a lot easier by keeping a journal today.
