I am with telus, and if i buy and unlocked iphone 3gs will it work for the HSPA network or only GSM?

Yes it works on the UMTS/HSDPA (850, 1900, 2100 MHz) and also the GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz). So it is basically quad-band in the sense of Edge/2G and is tri-band in the sense of HSPA/3G.
